I patched and configured the linux kernel 2.4.22 with the grsecurity
but my machine doesn't start with the 2.4.22-grsec kernel
I get this error message
VFS: Cannot open root device "LABEL=/" on 00:00
please append a correct "root=" boot option
VFS:Unable to mount root fs on 00:00

Does the 2.4.22 kernel with grsecurity completely disabled boot?
Does the 2.4.22 kernel without grsecurity patched in boot?

I got this in the /boot
initrd-2.4.22-grsec-1.9.12.img
initrd-2.4.22-grsec.img

I only made the image for the second one...

No idea then, as I don't use initrd myself. Have you considered just compiling in the code used for your root filesystem and hard disk driver?

no I didn't because I read on some help stuff that it's better to install on a kernel source.. clean one
