Postby rha » Wed Oct 31, 2012 11:50 am

Hi

Using kernel 3.4.7 with grsecurity-2.9.1-3.4.7-201208011850.patch the kernel panics while quagga/bgpd opens a connection.
See below for /proc/cpuinfo.

power management:

I reproduced the kernel panic on both NIC drivers e100 and e1000.

On other CPUs, no panic happens, but invalid md5sum are being transmitted (visible with tcpdump -M PASSWORD):
NIC drivers e1000e, igb; Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E7400 @ 2.80GHz

This also happens when using the latest grsec patch grsecurity-2.9.1-3.4.7-201208021520.patch.
We do use other kernel patches, however the issue only appears if the grsec patch is included, regardless of all other patches.

When running the same kernel in vmware or virtualbox (NIC e1000), md5sums are fine.

a few things to try if you have the time:

1. can you enable CONFIG_DEBUG_SG to see if it gives us more information?
2. what happens with a vanilla kernel?
3. can you log the value of bp and sg.page_link in net/ipv4/tcp_ipv4.c:tcp_v4_md5_hash_pseudoheader just after the call to sg_init_one?

Re: kernel 3.4.7 + grsec 2.9.1 + MD5SIG kernel panic

I used the following patch to inspect bp and sg.page_link:
Code: Select all
diff -rup linux-3.4.7.orig/net/ipv4/tcp_ipv4.c linux-3.4.7/net/ipv4/tcp_ipv4.c
--- linux-3.4.7.orig/net/ipv4/tcp_ipv4.c   2012-11-13 07:46:20.000000000 +0100
+++ linux-3.4.7/net/ipv4/tcp_ipv4.c   2012-11-13 08:04:58.000000000 +0100
@@ -1101,6 +1101,7 @@ static int tcp_v4_md5_hash_pseudoheader(
    bp->len = cpu_to_be16(nbytes);

    sg_init_one(&sg, bp, sizeof(*bp));
+   printk(KERN_CRIT "%s: bp=0x%p sg.page_link=%lu", "tcp_v4_md5_hash_pseudoheader (after sg_init_one)", bp, sg.page_link, __func__);
    return crypto_hash_update(&hp->md5_desc, &sg, sizeof(*bp));
 }

On a vanilla kernel 3.4.7, the output is:
Code: Select all
tcp_v4_md5_hash_pseudoheader (after sg_init_one): bp=0xf7205294 sg.page_link=4153348258
tcp_v4_md5_hash_pseudoheader (after sg_init_one): bp=0xf7205294 sg.page_link=4153348258
... (repeating same bp and sg.page_link values)

With grsec compiled into the kernel 3.4.7, the output is:
Code: Select all
tcp_v4_md5_hash_pseudoheader (after sg_init_one): bp=0xff9f7240 sg.page_link=4154461922

I did enable CONFIG_DEBUG_SG in both cases. I think the BUG_ON message in lib/scatterlist.c would appear at least with log level critical. But I found no other BUG: message in the console other than the kernel panic.

I can prevent the kernel panic by not loading any kernel modules.
I thought I had pinpointed the cause down to module ip6t_mh, but I could not verify this on other installations reliably.

I will continue my tests to see if this also prevents invalid MD5SIGs to be transmitted on hardware where no panic occurs.

It does not matter, what modules I load to prevent the kernel panic. It only matters how many.
This means, the panic only happens, after a certain amount of kernel memory is allocated.

(I did not try loading the modules after starting bgpd though. They were only loaded upon boot, before bgpd was started.)

The corruption of MD5SIG passwords on the hardware, where no panic occurred at all, can not be avoided by loading fewer kernel modules.

i've been looking at the related code again and i think the problem stems from dynamic percpu area allocation that somehow goes wrong after a certain amount of it got allocated (this would correlate nicely with your observation about modules too). i'll think of a way to debug it and let you know, thanks for your patience ;).

can you try this: in mm/vmalloc.c:map_kernel_range_noflush() add the following line:
Code: Select all
printk("PAX: addr:%lx size:%lx\n", addr, size);
and send me the logs please. also i'd like to see /proc/vmallocinfo on a working/failing kernel as well (preferably something 3.6.x based).

map_kernel_range_noflush() seems only run while grsec is compiled into the kernel.

I adapted the patch slightly, increasing the log level:
printk(KERN_CRIT "PAX: addr:%lx size:%lx\n", addr, size);

hmm, in that case can you stick in a dump_stack call as well to see the backtrace?

I sent you the stack trace per PM last week.

I tested a 64bit kernel on the CPU "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E7400 @ 2.80GHz", where with 32bit no panic occurs but MD5SIGs are corrupt, as reported in the initial post of this thread.
With 64bit on that multi-core CPU, the MD5SIGs (BGP) are correct.

I can't test 64bit kernel on the single core CPU where panics occur, because it is not 64bit capable ("Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz").
